    Dear Mr. dela Pena,

Thank you for your e-mail message about the practice of cockfighting and certain provisions in U.S. law affecting the trade and transportation of game cocks.

I appreciate you contacting me about this subject and the Congress’s consideration of H.R. 2419, the Farm, Nutrition, and Bioenergy Act of 2007. I furthermore appreciate having received your general analysis of several positive and negative aspects associated with cockfighting.

The innovative and new methods outlined in your message intending to make the practice of cockfighting more humane are important considerations. Such methods could help to increase acceptance of cockfighting by the general public and address concerns of the animal welfare community.

I will keep your views and the information you have provided to me in mind as Congress considers the farm bill. I appreciate your insight and I again thank you for your comments.

    Sincerely,

    /s/
